In "Tom Sawyer," how does Tom's behavior change from before and after the murder in the graveyard?

How does he act before the murder and after he sees the murder? I know that after Injun Joe kills Doc Robinson, Tom is nice to Muff Potter and brings him small gifts, but I can't think of how he acted beforehand. Thanks :)
